Wine was popular in Palestine, then!

Die schönste Jungfrau sitzet dort oben wunderbar.
ihr gold'nes Geschmeide blitzet,sie kämmt ihr gold'nes Haar.
Sie kämmt es mit goldenem Kamme und singt ein Lied dabei,
das hat eine wundersame, gewaltige Melodei.

I read that the ancient Greeks diluted their wine with water and never drank water without wine so they wouldn't get sick. It's probably what kept Alexanders army from getting dysentery - while the Northern Europeans suffered a great deal when they entered Italy during the Roman Empire.

Drinking though has never been a problem in the Mediterranean countries. My parents were Greek, and as children we were free to drink anything we wanted - but we really didn't care. I think there's a genetic component because I know the native Americans had real problems, and I was told by a Japanese woman that they have a problem with drinking. My granddaughters Japanese girl friend became an alcohol when she was only 16..

All my ancestors were wine growers.
And I think that makes our genes resistant to alcoholism.
