About 25% of the people of Wales can speak Welsh Gaelic, but most of them speak English most of the time so I am nominating Wales as an English-speaking part of Europe which I have visited - my wife has Welsh cousins.

P.S. The Welsh national anthem (Land of my Fathers) sung in Welsh by spectators at international rugby matches is wonderful. A few years ago the English member of parliament who was Secretary of State for Wales tried to join in, but he forgot the words after about 3 seconds and stood silently (with a very confused look on his face) for the rest of the anthem.

Yes, of course! It seems I have overlooked Wales! A pity!

The Welsh anthem was first sung at a rugby match in 1905. The New Zealand team (called the "All Blacks") were undefeated in their last 27 games when they went to Cardiff. It was (and still is) their custom to intimidate their opponents by performing a Maori war dance (the haka) just before the game started, but when they finished the Welsh team and 40,000 supporters gave a very passionate rendition of "Land of My Fathers" in retaliation.
Wales beat the All Blacks, so the tradition of singing this anthem continued.
