During the campaign for a Scottish parliament, a national anthem to replace "God Save the Queen" was discussed, and "Scotland the Brave" was one of the contenders. However the final choice was "Flower of Scotland" (which fondly remembers the heroic struggle to maintain Scottish independence in the 1300's).

For those who felt Scotland had little influence on UK government policy, it seemed that "Hermless" (by the Dundee singer/songwriter Michael Marra) would be a better choice.

Hermless is the Scots word for harmless. The chorus of the song is:-

I'm hermless, hermless there's never nae bother fae me,
I gae to the library tae tak oot a book, and then I go home for my tea.

Michael Marra (who died about 10 years ago) is a bit like a modern MacGonagall (with a keyboard), but his lyrics are meant to be funny!
